Why do I want a Digital Download?
Why Digital?
Digital downloads are images that you download to your computer to be re-used to your hearts content. Keep them on your phone , Ipad, tablet, computer or use them for printing on all kinds of imagineable surfaces.
Digital images are a cost effective way to reuse your images time and time again. By using digital images you can archive your memories on any format you choose, control the cost of printing, create gifts for yourself and loved ones. Digital is the ultimate way to relive and reuse your images for years to come
What size of digital download do I need?
If you are ordering a download from Porch Pig Productons here are the sizes we offer.
A Web Size image is roughly 640x480 pixels in size, or 0.3 megapixels. This is great for web sharing on social sites like Facebook.
A 1Mpix image is roughly 1 megapixel in size. In English, that means a square 1 megapixel image would be about 1000 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high. good to use for prints up to 4x6, screen savers and small gift items.
A 4Mpix image is 4 megapixels. This is a size that allows for quality printing at most reasonable sizes. If you want to print at really large poster sizes, you would probably want a larger image.
This is the size you use on everything except the really big stuff like huge posters.
An Original image is the exact image that the photographer has put online. It is the original size of the image, identical in every way. This is the original cropped image go as big or little as you within reason.
If your "Original" digital dowmload does not suit your needs contact us and we will see if some adjustments can be made
What is a personal license
Personal License or Commercial License?
If you want to make gifts and personal Items you need a "Personal" license.Although the wording in the personal license looks daunting all it means is that you will not use the digital downlaod for monetary gain without prior permission or the purchase of a commercial license. If your not sure and have a commercial idea for the photo and need to play with it before deciding on the investment contact me.
If you are using the image for the following you need a commercial license
- advertising, promotion, brochures, packaging
- as part of a commercial website for promotional purposes (maximum 800x600 pixels) use
- prints, posters, flyers, tearsheets for promotional purposes (not for resale)
- prints, posters, or other commercial display of Media
- magazines, books, newspapers, other printed publications
- video, broadcast, theatrical
How do I work with digital downloads?
How to work with digital downloads
- Whenever possible make a copy of your digital image! " I will be repeating this a lot!"
Save your original like you would a negative and use the copy for editing and projects. - Before you purchase any software... please keep the following in mind.
Do not think you have to have expensive software to utilize many of todays photo gift options.
You will be surprised how often your image will upload to your chosen vendors product as is and work great.
If your image does need editing many vendors have software on their site.
If you need to change your download for a special project like scrapbooking etc.. you can choose from a multitude of easy to use free digital editing software that can be used either on your desktop ( this means you don't have to be online) or by signing up for a free online account with their service.
Keep in mind Many vendors allow you the option of adding captions, frames, borders etc.
- Research, your chosen vendor for editing tools before spending any money on software you did not need.
- Experiment, you will learn many basics using a vendors built in tools.
Ask questions.
Vendors provide all these nifty tools so you will purchase your finished product from them.
They are happy to help you.
Only edit copies of your image.Digital downloads that are purchased from our sales galleries will be in what is known as a .jpg or .Jpeg format
If you are editing your image from software installed on your computer make a copy of the original image rename the copy close the original and edit the copy.
Re-editing the same Jpeg or JPG image can be destructive to the pixels your image is made of.
Over time this will affect the printed quality of your image.
Why do my photos look funny when I enlarge them?
Size Matters. Sizing can sound confusing because often times the ppi (pixels per square inch) resolution of your image will allow larger sizes than the original dimensions.
This sounds all techy but basically ppi is just all those little dots that make up your picture.
For a simple explanation, imagine or draw a solid circle on a pair of cheap nylons now pull the nylons across a piece of white card board notice how much white you can see showing through your circle? In a photo that would be considered "pixelated" the larger the piece of cardboard the more white you will see the smaller the cardboard the less white you will see.
High resolution images 240 ppi and up are more like drawing the same sized circle on a pair of leggings when you put it to the card board test you will notice a lot less white showing through.
For example if you compared two different digital images cropped to 4x6 the one with fewer pixels might only be enlarged up to 5x7 or 8x10 while the one with more pixels may make a great poster.
Often times print fullfillment services such as Walgreens and Shutterfly will put a handy little warning symbol for sizes that are to large for your image.
If you need a larger download size for one of "Porch Pig Productions" images please contact us.
The price varies but we won't butcher your wallet.
